The study of prostate cancer, and all cancers for that matter, is best performed using the highest levels of scientific vigor and methodology. Randomized studies provide information that allows us to compare, head to head, several different treatments and get statistical results that help to guide the best treatments available. Other types of studies may have inherent biases built into them, perhaps because of the authors' personal or institutional bias, or perhaps because of how the data was analyzed and where and how certain assumptions were made or taken. It is important, therefore, to not only understand the results of scientific studies, but also how these studies were formulated and conducted. Many opponents and supporters of studies have written critiques that are just as important as the articles themselves.
Separate from scientific studies that are usually printed in peer-reviewed medical journals, news articles are usually seen by many more people, and are usually "watered down" so that they can be best understood by the general public. Many news articles come out each week or even every day about cancer - some of them are excellent reviews, but others often miss the mark, or don't point out some of the criticisms or areas of missing data that might have made a study less valid.
